Do you like it when some characters are just completely out of it? For example, Hermy's got a tatoo and Draco's writing love letters to her. Or does it just push yer last nerve?
How about AU fics? Do you like all that crazy stuff or are you a traditional type?

I don't really like AU, ya know, where they're all like muggles or something. Of course, sometimes if you want to write something, but it doesn't fit with the last book or something, than you can make it AU after HBP or whatever. DOes that make any sense?
OCC bugs me sometimes, but a LITTLE OCCness is needed at times. Like, for most people's favs: Draco/Ginny, or Draco/Hermione, for BOTH those pairings, all the characters have to be a BIT OCC. Because lets face it. If Draco was IN character, he'd never date EITHER. You see what I'm saying?

I agree with Monica about the AUs..i'm not really a fan of them when everything but the characters names are changed from the original or something. but like.. Post Hogwarts and things like that..stuff that we haven't seen in the books, but still kind of sticks to the line is fine by me.
OOC... i have no problem with it if the author manages to me the change in character traits believable.

I love AU's! But they have to be really good and help you really understand what's going on in that universe. OOC... i have no problem with it if the author manages to me the change in character traits believable. ^Same here. It has to be really believable and good reasons as to why the character changed so much.

The only one I have a problem with is OOC. However, if the author makes the change in the character believable and sticks to the character's new personality, then I'm fine with it. (They can't make Draco turn into a big teddy bear over night (not literally) and start chasing Hermione around, but have him yell and insult her in the next chapter...)
EDIT: No, wait, I lied. I just remembered a type of AU fic that I loathe. When they take our beloved characters, turn them into muggles, and drop them into a (usually American) highschool. >.< I hate it.

ooooooh I HATE that. Its like, basically, you just took the same character names! Its has NOTHING to do with the books, so whats the point?

i've never read one like that and i don't think i want to
i love AU fics if they're done right.. like Amy's "By Twist of Fate". That was a GREAT AU fic.
I HATE a lot of OOCness. If it's just a smidgen, then it's okay, but if it's a whole bunchload, then i'm mad

Yeah I'm annoyed by most OOCness. I think there is a fine line between making a character totally out of character and letting them mature and grow as they age. For a while I was really in to post-Hogwarts fics in which I think allows more flexibility as far as characters go because you can explain some pretty big character changes (although it needs to be a logical, well thought out explanation). I also really love Marauders Era fics where the characters/personalities are not THAT fixed anyways so you can play around a bit.
AU sometimes bothers me. I think it takes a dedicated, thoughtful writer to make AU work, but I've read some really great ones.

AU sometimes bothers me. I think it takes a dedicated, thoughtful writer to make AU work, but I've read some really great ones. I agree with this 100%. I think that there are many authors who say "Oh, who cares, I'm gonna make Hermione totally emo and skater punk" (I only use that example cuz I read the first chapter of a story today, and Hermione was like this and I had to stop reading) Thats OOC AND AU. Because then she is like a COMPLETELY different person. It doesn't fit. But then there are those authors who say, well, I'm going to sit down and write a good fic, think about the character personalities, and even though I'm gonna change a lot, I'm gonna TRY and at least make it BELIEVEABLE.

yeah. see.. i think that Keeping characters true to their personalities is the most important thing..which is why i can usually late AUs slide if done well.. because keeping them believable when in a new situation takes talent.

I love AU if it's written well. I mean, if we stuck to all the traditions, then the same plots would just keep looping back around (even though they still do sometimes). I hate when they turn them into americans or Muggles. That's just a writer trying to get out of actually writing from the eyes of a wizard or someone from England. It's lame, really. But to put a character in a different house or with a different person...those can get quite interesting.
OOC's burn me up. Like when Hermione suddenly has these hot cousins who come for a visit (or are new kids at the school) and they give Hermione a huge makeover so now she's liek OMGBEAUTIFUL and everyone loves her, especially Draco, and then she gets piercings and make-up and it is just so aggravating...arr...
And if you make Ginny OOC, you're REALLY retarded. She's arleady perfect! She's pretty, Popular, talented at Quidditch, averagely smart (at the least), and has Harry Potter's heart. What more could you want? I hate when people turn Ginny into a dark haired Emo-kid who hates life and her family. Come on, she's like the Family GURU! She doesn't feel left out...they all dote on her! The only thing she's EVER had to complain about is her brothers over protecting her...which is normal...but even that little detail gets raped from behind in a lot of stories.

I've actually recently changed my opinions on AU. Not because of a Harry Potter fic, mind you, but because of a HSM one... I really finally understood what GOOD AU is. Bad AU, where everyones a Muggle and goes to Muggle high school is STILL bad, but good AU, where one little action is changed, and changes the course of the entire story... Thats actually pretty cool...

When I write my hermione/twin fics I always write her a bit ooc. I change her additude a little so she's more bold and outgoing then normal, and she says things she wouldn't say in the books. I wrote one where she died her hair black...but that was just cause i did, and i usually have her listening to stuff I listen to, or I think I had her listening to iPod once. I don't like to change the HP world too much though, I like to try and keep it as true to the books as possible.
I don't mind AU too much, as long as they're not turning everyone into muggles and putting them in HS, like mentioned above. Whats the point of that honestly? lol. I read a fic once where they had Ginny and Hermione smoking ciggarettes out the window at the burrow, and it was horrible. That's a little to AU and OOC for my taste.
