lol. i don't ask my friends to read my work as none of them are into HP (i'm all alone ) so i have to go on the faith that its ok and wait for the reveiws to tell me how bad it is lol. this is prolly one of the reasons i don't attempt humour cos i'm v. bad at it lol

Have you thought of getting a beta? I have two who work on my story, and they're wonderful... I chose two reviewers who give me honest opinions and who are very different... best decision I ever made.

i have a beta for the story i'm working on at the moment and its really helpful. they're always honest and tell you exactly whats worng with your story and how to improve it. when i tried writing humor, i read thru it and it just made me cringe - thats how i kno it was bad lol soi gave up on humor.

Omg, are they ever... they make alot of difference for me. You just have to make sure you choose wisely. Email them first and ask them if they would consider it, and befor they accept, explain what it is you would want from them and ask for a little info about them.
See, this is helpful because you need to know that they are going to do what you need...
The first girl I'd asked was a reviewer that was always incredibly honest. she would point out critical things that no one else would, and I grudgingly always agreed with her, lol. I wrote to her, first, and asked what she thought of doing it and told her that if she didn't have the time, it was ok, but she was a great reviewer who was always honest, so on so forth. She wrote me back and told me she'd like to, but had never beta'd before and was... over 25, lol... so I could reconsider if I wanted to. She said she grew up in Poland and now lives in New Jersey- she graduated college having studied English and Literature. However, she didn't write fanfic, she just read. I chose her, and then emailed someone else.
The other girl lives in England, so she britpicks for me, lol. She's sixteen, which is a big difference from my other beta, so the points of views are great because I hear thoughts from younger and older readers. She writes her own fanfic and is in her last year of school...
Both are awsome beta's, and I can ask them anything and I'll get an honest answer. They're very different, which is great, because they each pick out different things in each chapter, and when I can't decide, we all debate about it a bit. It works out really well, and makes writing more enjoyable, because I'm not under all the stress of having to proofread and mentally debate what to do with a paragragh I just can't figure out.
Yeah, if you can find a good person to beta, it is well worth it. What kind of fics do you write? I might be able to beta for you, or recommend someone.

I like fics. I mean, because I'm pretty much a big Draco/Hermione shipper and it's not happening in canon so...yeah. Basically, I'll have to resort to fanfics to see that couple together. And another thing is that, since JKR probably wouldn't write about Lily and James, that's another part where fanfics could satisfy my imaginations.

I love HG/DM as well. I'm mental about them, i just love them together. Draco is just so hot! I write HG/DM as well.

Yay!
I love the fics that have the whole love/hate relationship going on because I feel like most of my relationships are like that (in the beginning at least lol).
I've always wanted to be a beta because sometimes I just don't really have time to sit down and write but I always have time to read! Betas are way cool.

lol. I wanted to be a beta as well. I mean...I like to write and everything but sometimes, I just don't have the time and everything and it's rather hectic to go around looking at other fics to see if they have the same plot as you do (I mean, I hate it when I get accused of plagiarism). So yeah...

Oh glorious fanfiction... don't get me started... wait to late I started out writing fanfiction for Sailor Moon... my first works really, really sucked! Then I moved on to Harry Potter... I started out as a Draco/Hermione shipper and began writing it as well... they sucked as well. Later, I realized the way I wrote Hermione was also the way I wrote Ginny... soooo, to make a long story short, I am now a devoted Draco/Ginny shipper. I've tried betas before, back when I was working on a chaptered fic but my first two betas fell off of the face of the earth (I'm now convinced the world is flat and they fell over the edge into oblivion... what else could have happened? ). I've pretty much given up on betas now. My fanfics are usually more angst/romance types... my best friend does humor (like Mel Brooks humor, lol) and she's a canon!shipper (Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione fanatic... puts a bit of a strain on our relationship ); it really amazes me how different our writing styles are when we are so similar in real life. Who here has had problems with flamers?I've only had a couple that have really gotten to me- the ones who told me my writing was crap (with believable reasons) and the ones who accuse me of stealing their work (this has happened oh... 3 or so times ). I usually ask the people who accuse me of plagiarism for proof- only one had some, and it was a similar plot line As for the other kind of flamer, well... I've learned to extract valuable constructive criticism from their babble ;D <3 Jess

I used to write a lot of fanfiction with homosexual themes... even though they weren't like.. making out or anything like that they were just in love (yay) I always got at least one person telling me I was a pervert... so yeah, flamers are BAD sometimes-- it's not even the way you write or grammar or even the story line they hate, it's they're own predjudice, and those are the worst kinds of flamers.
You're lucky your friend writes fanfic too, I'm the only one of my bunch that does anything remotely literature-istic.

Hrm...Honestly, I feel that it's alright to give criticism but when people gets off the road and start flaming fics for no apparent reason, it is rather rude.
And as for betas falling off the face of Earth (lol...), IMO, it's rude that they just stopped and didn't tell you that they didn't have enough time. I mean...at least I think they just didn't reply to you or something or that's the way it seems like from frogsofchocolate's post.
